About the SSO
The Connected Media Experience, Inc. is a non-profit standard-setting organization (SSO) incorporated in 2009 in the U.S. state of Delaware under section 501(c)(6) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. It is governed by a Steering Committee drawn from member companies.
The SSO’s mission is to:
- Develop technical standards for a new digital media package format and supporting back-end services
- Promote adoption of the standards
To learn about the technical standard, see About the Standard
The SSO is a member-driven organization. The standards development process takes place in committees and working groups, which will submit specifications to the Steering Committee for approval. Where possible, existing free and open technologies will be used. Members must disclose essential patents that they control and must commit to reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) licensing terms. The SSO’s policies favor royalty-free technology, though it may choose to adopt royalty-bearing technology as well.
In its first year, the SSO will focus on completing and promoting Version 1 of the technical standard. Companies may adopt this specification with or without joining the standards body. Already, some companies are working on products and titles that comply with an early version of the standard in the expectation that it will be employed in a broadening range of platforms and devices.
SSO membership offers strong benefits to participating companies. For more information, see our Membership
